Sorcerer · Ranged AoE caster
Chain Lightning Sorcerer
Cast forever, blink on cooldown, let the sparks do the killing.
The classic chain-caster. You keep the mana bar fed, spam Chain Lightning into every pack, and let Crackling Energy detonate wherever the bolts land. Teleport keeps you alive while the enchantment slot fires a second Chain Lightning for you — a screen full of lightning with almost zero downtime.

The level path
Every band is a range of levels. Take the steps in order as you reach them — each one says why it beats the alternative.
Your progress
Mark objectives as you complete them
- 1
Levels 1–2
0/2Build the mana habit before the Core slot opens
- SparkRank 1
The mana-feeding Basic — every bolt pays you back resource, which is the whole currency of this build.
- Enhanced Spark1 pt
More mana per hit — start the loop early so Core ranks never stall.
- 3
Levels 3–5
0/3Take Chain Lightning the moment the Core slot unlocks and never look back
- Chain LightningRank 1
The whole build. Bounces multiply your cast into a pack-wide clear.
- Enhanced Chain Lightning1 pt
Lucky hits start spawning Crackling Energy — the first link in the detonation loop.
- TeleportRank 1 (Defensive unlocks at 5)
Your only survival tool that matters — instant reposition and you're gone before hits land.
Unlock: Level 3: Core skill slot unlocks — Chain Lightning becomes your only real attack for the rest of the game.
- 6
Levels 6–10
0/3Rank Chain Lightning, harden Teleport, add the freeze button
- Chain LightningRanks 2–3
More bolts, more bounces, more Crackling Energy — keep it maxed as points allow.
- Shimmering Teleport1 pt
Damage reduction wrapped around every blink — Teleport becomes a defensive cooldown, not just travel.
- Frost NovaRank 1
Instant crowd control when a pack closes in — the freeze also sets up clean Chain Lightning bounces.
- 11
Levels 11–15
0/3Unlock the enchantment slot — the build's second engine
- Chain Lightning EnchantmentSlot at 15
The enchant effect fires Chain Lightning alongside your casts, effectively doubling your bolts. This is the endgame loop.
- TeleportRanks 2–3
Lower cooldown = more blinks = more damage-reduction windows.
- Frost NovaEnhanced rank
Tighter cooldown on the panic button before Torment difficulty starts punishing.
Unlock: Level 15: Enchantment slot unlocks — slot Chain Lightning and your cast count doubles.
- 16
Levels 16–25
0/3Layer barriers and mobility while Chain Lightning finishes maxing
- Chain LightningRanks 4–5
Finish maxing your Core skill — every rank is real pack-clear speed.
- Ice ArmorRank 1
A persistent barrier over your mana bar — barrier uptime later feeds damage multipliers, so start the habit now.
- BlazeRank 1
A burning trail behind you plus speed while it runs — pair with Teleport for free screen-to-screen movement.
- 26
Levels 26–35
0/3Ultimate window + crit key passive come online
- Unstable CurrentsRank 1 (Ultimate unlocks at 12+, take it here)
During the window your casts echo additional casts — pop it for elites, boss packs and Helltide events.
- ElementalistKey passive
A healthy mana bar turns into guaranteed crits against wounded enemies — take it once your mana regen holds up, not before.
- Mana passivesRanks 1–3 each
Every point of regen and max mana feeds both the enchant casts and the key passive threshold — prioritize resource over small damage passives.
Unlock: Level 30+: World Tier 3 (Nightmare) — re-gear into Legendary items with the aspects below.
- 36
Levels 36–45
0/3Legendary Aspects carry the build into endgame shape
- Aspect of DisobedienceArmor slot
Stacking armor while you deal damage — solves the squishy-caster problem that kills most Sorcerers in Nightmare.
- Aspect of the Unstable CurrentsUtility slot
Supercharges the Unstable Currents window — your burst becomes a storm instead of a gust.
- Aspect of RechargingRing or armor
Cooldown skills shave each other's cooldowns — Teleport and Frost Nova start cycling constantly.
- 46
Levels 46–50
0/2Enter the endgame engine
- Barrier-damage aspectOne slot
Ice Armor's barrier becomes a damage multiplier — the payoff for the uptime habit you built at 16–25.
- Paragon BoardsStart at 50
Open the first board and path toward Intelligence + crit nodes; respec freely until 60 — it's cheap.
Unlock: Level 50: Paragon Board + World Tier 4 (Torment) after a gear refresh.
- 51
Levels 51–70
0/4Glyphs, torment farming, build finalization
- Control GlyphSocket first
Damage against crowd-controlled enemies — Frost Nova + your board's CC nodes make this pay constantly.
- Charged GlyphSocket second
Multiplies the lightning nodes on your board — the pure-damage pickup.
- Board's matching glyphThird socket
Pick the mana or crit glyph your actual board centers on — glyph value depends on the nodes you path through, so read the board before socketing.
- Torment dungeonsFarm loop
Helltides + Nightmare dungeons + Lair bosses for Ancestral gear and glyph leveling.
- 70
Levels 70+
0/4Push the Pit and refine
- The OculusUnique staff
Warps Teleport into an even stronger dodge tool — a Lair-boss lottery prize that, if it drops, frees up how you play the whole build. Verify current tuning on the linked guides.
- Tal Rasha's Iridescent LoopUnique ring
Pays out when you rotate damage types — a natural fit once a second element shares your rotation.
- Masterworking + TemperingCraft layer
Temper Chain Lightning/Teleport affixes, then masterwork mana and crit stats first.
- Check live tuningEvery season
Enchant effects, aspect values and glyph thresholds shift by patch — verify final numbers on Maxroll or Icy Veins.

Torment entry · 50–60
0/4Survive World Tier 4 and feed the mana engine
- Ancestral re-gearFirst week
Replace leveling legendaries with Ancestral pieces from Helltides and Lair bosses — Maximum Mana and Cooldown Reduction first; the loop dies without both.
- GlyphsControl first, Charged second
Frost Nova plus your board's crowd-control nodes keep Control active almost permanently; Charged multiplies the lightning nodes your boards route through.
- Aspect refreshMax rolls
Re-imprint Disobedience, Recharging and Storm Swell at their highest rolls on Ancestral gear — barrier damage and Teleport uptime are your defense budget.
- Mana economy checkBar never empties
If the enchant's bonus Chain Lightning stops firing, it's almost always a Maximum Mana problem, not damage — fix resource before touching crit.
Glyph bonus thresholds are reached by pathing Paragon boards toward the glyph socket — plan board routes so Charged rakes lightning nodes before spending points.
Farming loop · 60–70
0/4Glyph XP, Crackling Energy tuning and uniques
- Nightmare dungeonsTier ladder
Primary glyph XP and Ancestral stream — run the highest tier you clear fast; Chain Lightning bounces reward pack density over boss arenas.
- Lair boss rotationSummon mats from Whispers
Boss loot tables are your unique hunt — Frostburn plus the staff and ring lottery pieces come from here.
- TemperingChain Lightning + Teleport
Temper Chain Lightning ranks and Teleport affixes onto every applicable slot before masterworking — Crackling Energy frequency scales with cast count.
- HelltidesChests + mats
Fastest rare-material and leveling gear farm — run them between dungeon keys.
The Pit push · 70+
0/3Climb tiers and finish the craft layer
- MasterworkingMana + crit first
Masterwork Maximum Mana and Critical Strike Chance before raw main-stat — the enchant doubling turns every extra cast into a multiplier.
- Pit climbingComfortable +3 tiers
Push tiers you clear reliably; the upgrade drops and leaderboard thresholds reward consistency.
- Glyph ranks15 → 21+
Every major glyph threshold changes board scaling — keep glyph XP running even during pushes.
Torment difficulty tiers and Pit rewards shift with patches — verify current thresholds on Maxroll or Icy Veins before spending gold.
Long-term refinement
0/3Uniques, enchant tuning and seasonal resets
- Unique hunt listBuild-defining pieces
Frostburn for freeze extension, The Oculus for Teleport warping, Tal Rasha's Iridescent Loop once a second element joins the rotation — run the specific Lair bosses that drop them.
- Enchant auditEach season
The Chain Lightning enchant's doubling and its mana cost sit at the center of the loop — verify live values before locking a Paragon path around them.
- Seasonal rerollEach season
Level paths stay evergreen; re-check glyph thresholds and aspect values against the live guides each season.

What to chase on every item
- 1
Maximum Mana / Mana Regeneration
Feeds the enchant casts AND the key passive threshold — never trade it away.
- 2
Cooldown Reduction
Teleport uptime is your entire defense layer.
- 3
Critical Strike Chance
Crackling Energy and lucky-hit effects all scale off crit frequency.
- 4
Critical Strike Damage
Elementalist windows make crits enormous.
- 5
Attack Speed
Faster casts = more Crackling Energy — until mana runs dry.
- 6
Damage Reduction / Total Armor
The caster's tax — Disobedience plus affixes keeps you upright.
Button order
Rotation priorities
Follow top to bottom — earlier steps take precedence over later ones.
Pull / Setup
- 1Step 1: Ice Armor before engaging — barrier uptime feeds your damage multipliers, so start it early.
- 2Step 2: Blink through the pack with Teleport to line up Chain Lightning bounces before the first cast lands.
Standard pack
- 1Step 1: Hold Chain Lightning into the densest enemy — the bounces clear the rest.
- 2Step 2: Walk toward spawned Crackling Energy — it detonates on contact; ignoring it is free damage wasted.
- 3Step 3: Re-cast Teleport on cooldown even when safe — the damage-reduction window is the real value.
Elites / Bosses
- 1Step 1: Pop Unstable Currents — every cast now echoes a second cast, doubling the lightning on the target.
- 2Step 2: Chain Lightning from mid-range so bounces still hit summons or add packs.
- 3Step 3: Frost Nova the moment anything closes distance — frozen enemies eat full-duration Chain Lightning.

Watch-outs
The mistakes that cost levels, kills and raid slots — flagged before you make them.
Don't slot the Chain Lightning enchantment before your mana regen keeps up — enchant casts drink the same bar you're already emptying, and a starved loop does no damage.
Elementalist keys off a full mana bar — taking it early means you're almost never above the threshold, and the key passive does nothing.
Teleport is defense, not just travel. If you feel squishy, it's almost always a Teleport-cooldown problem, not an armor problem.
Don't overcap attack speed while your mana bar runs dry — faster casts on an empty tank just make you whiff faster.
Don't farm Torment before re-gearing into Legendary Aspects at 30+/50+ — the difficulty spike punishes blue gear.
Seasonal patches retune enchant effects, aspect values and glyph thresholds — verify final numbers in the linked live guides before you lock a Paragon path.
