Warlock · DoT engine + pet sustain — the lazy immortal

Affliction Warlock

Corruption, Curse, Drain — repeat until Azeroth gives up. The lazy immortal.

Affliction is the warlock's sustain identity: DoTs that never lapse, a pet that tanks for you, and a Life Tap loop that converts your health bar into damage. Forever changes the math in your favor — hit and crit are unified across spells, healer gear now also grants spell damage, and the reworked dungeons feed casters real upgrades. Level with a Voidwalker, drain-tank your way to 60, and stop reading heal-up tips.

The Forever beta caps at level 30 (beta ends Oct 21, 2026). This path is trimmed to what's reachable now; the full level 1–60 track, endgame chapters and raid prep return at launch on Nov 4, 2026. The S rating is BuildForge's own — Icy Veins' Forever tier lists are marked Coming Soon and Maxroll doesn't cover Forever.

Your progress

Tick objectives off as you complete them

  1. 1

[1–9] Learn the drain loop: DoTs up, pet-close, tap and refill

    0/4
    • ImmolateLevel 1

Opening fire DoT — pairs with Corruption from your very first pull.

    • CorruptionLevel 4

Your flagship DoT. Cast it on everything, always — the whole spec orbits this spell.

    • Curse of Agony + Life TapLevel 6

Agony for anything that lives longer than ten seconds; Life Tap is your mana battery — tap, then drain the health back.

    • FearAs trained

Emergency stop button for when a pull goes sideways.

  2. 10

[10–14] First talent points: straight into Corruption

    0/2
    • Improved CorruptionRanks 1–5

Cuts the cast toward instant and adds damage — the first DoT never gets interrupted again.

    • Drain LifeLevel 14 trainer

The core of drain-tanking: damage that pays your own health bar. Build the loop now.

  3. 15

    [15–19] Feed the tap-and-drain economy

Every tap returns more mana for the same health — the resource loop that makes Affliction infinite.

    • Improved Curse of AgonyRanks 1–3

Your default curse gets a straight damage bump — boring, permanent, excellent.

  4. 20

[20–24] Pet quest era — pick your drain-tank partner

    0/4
    • VoidwalkerLevel 20 quest

Taunt-holding pet that makes drain-tanking possible — the foundation of the lazy immortal.

    • SuccubusLevel 20 quest (alt)

More damage when nothing needs tanking — some levels prefer the whip.

    • Improved Drain LifeRanks 1–5

Your sustain scales per rank — this is the talent that keeps you never sitting to eat.

    • Drain SoulAs trained

Soul shards fuel soul bags, Healthstones and re-summons — classic grants the shard only on the killing blow (see watch-outs).

Reward: Level 20: the pet quests — Voidwalker for tanking, Succubus for speed.

  5. 25

[25–29] Hit the Forever 16-point capstone milestone

Reward: Level ~25: your 16th talent point unlocks the new Forever capstone ability in your main tree.

  6. 30

[30] Nightfall. The spec's signature proc arrives.

    0/4
    • NightfallRanks 1–2

Corruption and Drain Life damage can proc a free instant Shadow Bolt — the Affliction engine's burst button. Fire it the moment it lights up.

    • Dark Pact1 point

Drains pet happiness into your mana bar — stacked with tap discipline, the casting never stops.

    • Grim ReachRanks 1–2

Longer range on your DoTs and curses — kite from safer ground, apply from off-tank distance.

    • FelhunterLevel 30 quest

      The dispel-eating anti-caster pet — your level-30 upgrade for casters and curse-spitters.

Reward: Level 30: Felhunter quest — Affliction gets its hunter-killer pet.

What to chase on every item

  1. 1

    Spell Damage (shadow-leaning)

Corruption, Curse of Agony, Drain Life and Shadow Bolt all scale — generic spell damage also feeds Immolate, your one fire DoT.

  2. 2

    Hit (unified)

Forever merges spell and melee hit into one system — gear it once and every bolt benefits.

  3. 3

    Intellect

Bigger pool = more taps per combat turn = more DoTs on more targets.

  4. 4

    Stamina

Drain-tanking makes you the second health bar — stamina is casting time.

  5. 5

    Spirit

Baseline regen between pulls; Dark Pact shifts pet happiness, spirit covers the gaps.

  6. 6

    Crit

DoTs don't crit in classic — crit is for Shadow Bolts and Nightfall windows, not Corruption ticks.

Button order

Your action bar

Follow top to bottom — earlier steps take precedence over later ones.

Pull

  1. Step 1: Send the pet first — the Voidwalker taunt is your permission slip to apply DoTs.
  2. Step 2: Corruption + Curse of Agony as the pet closes; Immolate for the opening fire tick.
  3. Step 3: Nothing else yet — let the DoTs and the pet do the work while you hold mana.

Standard rotation

  1. Step 1: Refresh Corruption and Curse of Agony as they fall off — they never lapse, ever.
  2. Step 2: Drain Life whenever your health dips; Life Tap only while the pet holds aggro and your health has room to drain back.
  3. Step 3: Nightfall proc: fire the instant Shadow Bolt immediately — it is free burst on every cooldown.
  4. Step 4: Swap to Curse of Elements on bosses when the raid's casters want the amplification.

Execute / Shards

  1. Step 1: Last 25%: Drain Soul — bonus damage, and the soul shard matters for the bag.
  2. Step 2: Healthstones out to the party before every pull — you are the consumable vendor.
  3. Step 3: Demonic Sacrifice windows (Felhunter for mana, Voidwalker for health) on the heaviest pulls.

Zero guessing

Watch-outs

The mistakes that cost levels, kills and raid slots — flagged before you make them.

  • Camp buffs don't stack with matching class buffs — pair camp food with a buff class you aren't running.

  • No flying mounts in Forever — your Felsteed at 40 is the commute; budget ground travel between dungeons.

  • Forever's unified hit/crit system kills every classic spell-hit table — use the linked calculator, not muscle memory.

  • Classic shard rules still bite: Drain Soul only yields a shard if it lands the killing blow — bank shards before big pulls, not during them.

  • Life Tap discipline: never tap below the health your next Drain Life can restore, and never tap while the pet is losing aggro — tap-die is the warlock's classic death.

  • Threat is classic-style: early Curse of Agony on an untaunted boss pulls it straight onto you — open after the first taunt.

  • Ruleset choice (Normal/PvP/RP) is per-character and permanent — pick before you invest. And with raids not opening until December 9, there is no reason to rush 60: the nine new dungeons are the gearing funnel.
